Aka, Raisin, is my first attempt at a resin and I have thrown my whole heart and
soul into this project. My dream is to have this Warmblood jumping mare cast
in resin as I think she represents something that has yet to be captured. She is
a Warmblood type that has been bred specifically for the hunter ring and her
form is truly "A" circuit, 3' to 3'6" classes from Pre-Green to First Year and
A/O, Junior Hunter. The ideal hunter form is something to me that is the most
breath taking vision and I stuck with what I know best on this project. I had a
definite idea of what I wanted......the stage of the jump, having just left the
ground.....her head on the vertical and neck arching towards the perfect
bascule (All The Gold, Sir Caletto, and Agincourt were great references).....her
legs hiked up and hoofs tucking towards her chin with extra effort ( a lovely
hunter mare Ooh La-La helped with this)........the appropriate amount of
muscling for a horse in this competitive condition.......a tail that was as real a
hunter tail as you can sculpt, with fine whispy like movement (had a great
reference on this).....and the base is on it's way to being a brush box (still very much WIP at this point!) rather than the usual stone wall.
As I have not had the sculpting background that I have in painting, I really
looked towards some of my favorite sculptors for influence and then combined
that with my own references and educated observations. Kitty Cantrell, Sarah
M-B, Brigitte Eberl, and Debbi Lermond all acted as my secret gurus on this
project.
Besides wanting to pay tribute to the classic hunter, I also wanted a mare for a
change! I was going to have the ears pinned back, so we would all know for
sure the horse is a mare, but I know some people only want to see fierce
mustangs with the ears flattened! So I went for what I call "radar ears" (All The
Gold was my reference).....the left ear shot forward and showing an
enthusuatic interest in what is on the landing side of the jump......the rightear
is cocked to the side though, still listening to her rider. She loves her joband
is willing to please. And yes, she is a little lop-eared.....I wanted a "real"horse
and I have known many a long eared WB mare and one in particular, a Twist
mare foaled, when bred to Abdullah, what I believe was the very first
International Hunter Futurity Nat'l Champion, Biermeister. As a trainer once
told me, lop ears help to keep the rain out of their eyes!
Getting a true WB hunter head was especially important to me. She's no
TB.....again I studied many heads of WB hunters and I wanted a head with
good substance and bone, flared nostrils, a slight convex shape to the end of
the nasal bone, a bit of a pukie lip, large kind eyes, particular shaping to the
orbital bones above the eyes and into the forehead, and just the right amount
of wrinkling and overall definition. I repeatedly compared photos of horses
heads that were the same size as the sculpture's head to decide how much
refinement there should be.....not too much and out of scale, but just enough
to be correct. Currently the only changes that I have made since the photos is added some whisker bumps, redefined her facial veins, softened her lower eyelid, and cleaned up the base.
Okay, well I've probably bored your pants off with all of this, but as you can
tellthis is very special to me.
